What Is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Women’s health physiotherapy is a specialist branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the unique physical challenges women face across their lifetime — from adolescence and pregnancy to postnatal recovery, menopause, and beyond.

It covers a wide range of conditions that are often under-discussed but deeply affect quality of life: pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, pelvic pain, diastasis recti, prolapse, sexual health, and pregnancy-related pain. Many women suffer in silence or are told these issues are ‘normal’ — but with the right physiotherapy, most can be significantly improved or fully resolved.

At our Kai Tak clinic, our women’s health physiotherapists combine hands-on clinical treatment with patient education, exercise prescription, and collaborative care — empowering you to take an active role in your own recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Women’s Health Conditions We Treat at Our Kai Tak Clinic

Our women’s health physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat a wide range of conditions. All care begins with a private, individual assessment.

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of the pelvis that plays a critical role in bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and core stability. When these muscles are too weak, too tight, or poorly coordinated, it can result in a range of distressing symptoms.

  • Stress urinary incontinence (leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise)
  • Urge incontinence and overactive bladder
  • Pelvic organ prolapse (bladder, uterus, or bowel)
  • Pelvic floor weakness after childbirth
  • Hypertonic (overactive) pelvic floor causing pain or difficulty

Postnatal & Postpartum Recovery

The weeks and months after birth are a physically demanding time. Whether you’ve had a vaginal delivery or a C-section, your body needs structured support to recover well — and to return safely to exercise, sport, and daily life.

  • Postnatal pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation) assessment and treatment
  • C-section scar management
  • Postnatal lower back and neck pain
  • Return to exercise and high-impact sport after birth
  • Postnatal Pilates (physiotherapist-led, 1:1)

Menopause & Hormonal Transitions

Hormonal changes throughout life — including perimenopause and menopause — can significantly affect the pelvic floor, bladder function, bone density, joint health, and overall physical wellbeing. Our physiotherapists provide evidence-based support through every hormonal transition.

  • Menopause-related incontinence and bladder changes
  • Pelvic organ prolapse management
  • Osteoporosis and bone health support
  • Painful intercourse related to hormonal changes
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation during and after menopause

Pregnancy & Prenatal Physiotherapy

Pregnancy places enormous demands on the body. In fact, research shows that 80% of women will experience lower back or pelvic girdle pain at some point during pregnancy. Physiological changes — including increased body mass, abdominal muscle stretching, hormonal ligament laxity, and fluid retention — alter posture and loading through the spine and pelvis, often resulting in pain.

  • Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD)
  • Lower back pain during pregnancy
  • Neck and upper back pain
  • Rib pain
  • Wrist pain / Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in pregnancy
  • Pelvic floor symptoms including incontinence, constipation, and pelvic pain
  • Birth preparation and pelvic floor risk screening
  • Perineal massage guidance
  • Pelvic preparation for natural labour

Pelvic Pain & Sexual Health

Pelvic pain is a common but often under-treated condition. Our women’s health physiotherapists provide a compassionate, evidence-based approach to managing persistent pelvic pain — always starting with a thorough private assessment.

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Vaginismus and dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
  • Vulvodynia
  • Endometriosis-related pain management
  • Coccydynia (tailbone pain)
  • Post-surgical pelvic pain

Female Athletes & Active Women

Our team has a strong background in sports physiotherapy for women, with particular expertise in helping female athletes return to training and competition after injury or childbirth — safely, confidently, and at full capacity.

  • Return to sport after pregnancy and postnatal recovery
  • Pelvic floor support for high-impact sports (running, HIIT, CrossFit)
  • Sports injury rehabilitation for female athletes
  • Women’s health considerations in strength training
  • Youth female athlete injury prevention
